Rosalyn Roker

Rosalyn Roker, MBA, MA, is a doctoral candidate in the School of Aging Studies at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, FL. Her graduate level training includes two master’s degrees (business administration and gerontology) and two graduate certificates (geriatric care management and evaluation). She has an interest in health disparities across the life course and collaborative evaluations. Her work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and presented at local and national conferences. For her dissertation project, Rosalyn plans to utilize qualitative methodology to: (1) examine whether differences exist in the perspectives of community-residing Blacks and Whites diagnosed with a serious mental disorder, and who are age 50 and older, about the accessibly, affordability, appropriateness, and availability of outpatient mental health services, and (2) explore factors that contribute to mental health treatment-seeking and engagement among this population.
As a graduate assistant, Rosalyn has taught courses at USF for the past 3 ½ years. She has been an instructor for several undergraduate courses, including Death and Dying, Elder Abuse and Neglect, and Business Management in an Aging Society. She has also been a guest lecturer for several courses, including Gerontological Counseling, Gerontological Case Management, Behavioral Health and the Family, Physical Changes and Aging, and The Life Cycle. Her other professional experience includes 25 years of law enforcement on the local and federal levels, including corrections officer, researcher/planner, deputy sheriff/law enforcement, postal inspector and special agent.
Rosalyn has a passion for helping others, particularly those who are less fortunate. Her volunteer activities include Trustee-at-Large for Florida Council on Aging, Meals on Wheels of Tampa Bay delivering meals to elderly and disabled adults, and various community service projects in the Tampa Bay area with her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. On a personal note, Rosalyn enjoys spending time with her family and close friends, cooking, and travelling.
